Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, BPH, is an enlargement of prostate that compresses urethra thereby obstructing passageway of urine through urethra. The enlargement is due to nodules in the periurethral region of the prostate but it is not a cancer nor is it a precursor to prostate cancer. BPH is common in older male population. An estimate of 50% of male population over 50 years of age develops symptoms of BPH and the number of population with BPH increases with age. Symptoms of BPH include frequent urge to urinate, especially at night, pain during urination, slow flow of urine, difficult to urinate, bladder retention caused by backflow of urine to the bladder, erectile dysfunction. Cause of PPH include hormonal related hypertrophy of prostate due to age, decreased sexual activity related erectile dysfunction, stress, smoking and alcohol consumption. In Western medicine, doctors would recommend surgery as a best long-term solution for BPH but it would affect sexual activities of the patient. In Oriental medicine, BPH can be treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine with more than 90% success.
